predictable pattern books

Middleton, S. E. (2006). Bebe' goes shopping.
Orlando, FL: Harcourtbooks.

ISBN: 0-15-205426-x

This book is about a child who goes to a supermarket with his mom. It's a bilingual book (English - Spanish). It's written with simple words quite easy to understand by children 3-5 year old. Children can learn and get to know some of the words in Spanish which could be also fun for them. I personally like the illustrations of the book, because they are simple, modern, colourful, and at the same time meaningful, which gives you quickly the idea and what is meant.
Children will like the illustrations because they vary a lot, each page is different from the other and gives you a different idea, the child's face is cute and friendly. I will use this book for children since they go shopping very often with their parents, this book can help them imagine themselves in the book in different parts (aisles) of the store.
I would provoke children's interest by talking about the supermarket and ask them questions: what can you buy in a supermarket? Let them say everything they know, talk and discuss about all the items one by one in order to give them more informations. I would stop and wonder about the pages where he's curious, and wants to touch everything, or the page where he leans and drops the key, in order to raise the children's curiosity and the danger of leaning on a cart.

3 ways to present the book:
A. Puppets: you can present the story by making puppets as mama, bebe' and the cashier, acting out their roles, using Spanish words to help children to learn  few words in Spanish. You can either create the puppets or use the different dollies to transform into the characters of the story.
B. Reading the story: gather all the children together, sitting on the floor opposite to me in a way that they can see the pages of the book and especially the illustrations very well, I will wonder about different pages and ask questions, such as: I wonder what is going to happen next?, let's see what "mama" is going to say, etc...
C. Felt board story: cut out on the different colours of felts the characters of the story, and also make a background on the felt board in order to let children feel the right environment. You can buy felts at the dollar store, craft store, fabric store, and make the "board' yourself.

Extensions:
A. Bring a picture of some of the items of the supermarket into the classroom such as: biscuit (animal shapes), melon, chocolate, etc..., and discuss about their nutrition values, to expand their knowledge in different areas.
B. Have a field trip to the supermarket of the neighbourhood more than once in a period of time. Stop at every aisle and discuss about different products.
C. Talk about the supermarket itself, why they have been created, what are the conveniences to shop at a supermarket.
